Youth Work: Theory & Practice So you want to work with young people? Youth Work: Theory and Practices gives learners an overview of the Youth Work and Social Services Profession and helps them to prepare for further study or supervised work with Youth – for example, as a teacher’s aide, working as a residential youth worker, or as an after school care worker. Course content includes: Practical Skills – The things you need to be able to DO as a youthworker. Includes counselling, networking, and communication skills as well as different activities which you can do with youth. Youth Issues – Topical Issues to do with youth today. Includes mental health issues, the youth justice system, and drug and alcohol issues. Future Focus – Career Planning and Work Skills. Includes learning about different youth work careers, goal setting, interview techniques and making a CV. Learning for Life – Academic Skills and skills that will help you cope with “learning the ropes” of whatever situation you are in. Includes study skills, research skills and essay writing as well as literacy and numeracy. Best Practice/Safe Practice – This is about Youth Work as a PROFESSION and about growing as a Youth Worker. This includes risk management and youthwork ethics as well as being a physically, culturally and emotionally safe practitioner of youth work. Reflection – Time to learn from your own experiences and become a reflective-practitioner. Group Project (Practicum/Work experience) – Creating projects for youth as a team. In the past we have run holiday programmes, a programme for at-risk youth, helped run fun-days at schools and run a pre-Gateway programme in conjunction with Tangaroa College. Acknowledging the findings of a review of Training Opportunities Programmes, and the development of the Tertiary Education Strategy, a broader approach is being set by Work & Income regarding eligibility. • Participants must be at least 18 years old or over to enrol. • Participants must be Registered as ‘Active’ Jobseekers with the Department of Work & Income (WINZ) to enrol.
